Portland, Oregon rapper, HS Dro, appeared on our Mezz Music Monday playlist twice this week, firstly through his firm representation of his West-Coast roots with “Grown Sh*t,” featuring Suavey P, and once again with his lyrical, yet melodic “No Sympathy.”
Out of the two selections, Dro holds “No Sympathy” closest to his heart, claiming that the song “came from a very real place. It’s one of those ones where making the song was therapeutic for the way I was feeling at the time. My friend Ike sent me that beat and as soon as I heard it I started to mumble that first line. That’s how I knew the song was going to come together naturally. The best songs are the ones where it feels like the next line pops in your head as soon as you record the last one.”
Despite the recent release of his 3rd solo project, Alejandro, Dro has plans of remaining consistent with his music output. He has high hopes that his recent relocation to Los Angeles will put him in a better position to push his name. “I’m hoping to really take my music career to the next level in LA. I want to do a lot more collaborations with bigger artists this coming year and shoot plenty of videos.” In addition to his career as a budding artist, Dro has also created @bigsmilesofficial, a streetwear brand starting to gain traction in his home of the Pacific Northwest. “As far as my clothing (Big Smiles Middle Fingers Up), I plan on growing that too. I want to keep coming up with new products and keep using my music as the main platform to promote it. The plan is for the brand and the music to grow together.”
