For our Mezz Music Mondays playlist, we love to feature artists from all over the world, but this week, we’re keeping it local with the New York-based duo, Late Night Thoughts, and their single “Get Back Up”.
Late Night Thoughts is a Singer/Songwriter duo that actually met during a college class called “Protest Through Song”. After working on music together, Brian and Micheal felt that they had a lot of musical chemistry. Luckily, they both joined the same A Capella group which allowed them to interact more outside of rehearsal and classes. After some jam sessions and writing sessions, they felt it was clear that they needed to perform together.
This week on our Mezz Music Mondays playlist, you’ll find the song “Get Back Up” off of their EP, Bridges and Tunnels. “Get Back Up” is a hopeful, upbeat sound about getting back up whenever you’re pushed down. Brian and Micheal also found the song fun to write, saying, “It started with Brian crafting the melody for the hook while on a walk in Marcus Garvey Park in Harlem and Michael quickly came up with the guitar part.” After they had the foundation, the verses and the lyrics started to come together as “Get Back Up” was crafted.
Different from their other songs, “Get Back Up” stands out because of its big production. With more instruments, more vocal stacking, and more rhythmic patterns, it stands out as the first track off of, Bridges and Tunnels. The band says, “It has a lot more vocal tracks than we usually use as well with doubles of Brian’s voice on the chorus and post choruses to bring that anthemic feel to the song”. If you liked “Get Back Up”, you should definitely check out “Sacrifice” off of their newest EP. This new song has a similar blend of a singer/songwriter style with pop production that they know you will love.
The best way to describe Late Night Thoughts’ music is organic. They said, “We really believe that music should serve as a way to bring people together and make them feel the power of the community around them.” That goal of the community is even reflected in their songwriting process. Usually, the lyrics and melodies written by Brian are matched with Micheal’s music and harmonies to make most of their songs. While they’ve also interacted with other songwriters such as Adam Sickler and Elysse Yulo, they enjoy the collaborative effort.
The Late Night Thoughts duo found Mezz Entertainment through Instagram, as they added, “It is so important to have more female voices in the music industry and we are proud to both support them and be supported by them, especially during Women’s History Month.” We appreciate the support and hope to reciprocate it! Make sure you check out Late Night Thought and their song, “Get Back Up” on our Mezz Music Mondays playlist.
