Mezz Music Mondays Feature: She Is Jules

February 24, 2022

This week for our Mezz Music Mondays Playlist feature, we’re highlighting She Is Jules with her new track, “Twice”. If you’re looking for a somber break-up ballad to add to your Pop playlist, “Twice” is definitely the song for you!

She Is Jules is a vibrant Pop/EDM artist based in the Bay Area of California. Originally, she went under the stage name, “JULES”, but ran into frequent issues with other artists using the same alias and posting songs under that same name. In 2021, she rebranded to “She Is Jules” on all of her social media platforms for, “Something less personal and more creative”. She’s continued to release songs under the name, “She Is Jules” feeling that she has more creative freedom and individuality. Some of those tracks include “Twice” and “Stop and Go” from her most recent single.

While “Twice” is sonically contemporary, Jules revealed that the song was actually written a year ago with a different back story. The song currently sounds like a break-up anthem about an up and down relationship, but it was actually written about an industry friendship that turned sour. Many of the lyrics in “Twice” talk about her trials in the entertainment industry as a musician. She says the lyric, “Everybody says that you’ll grow thicker skin, but I never get use to it” is, “directly talking about the ups and downs of being in music”. She originally wrote the song over a Splice loop, but then took it to a producer who revamped the song and rewrote it to reflect a breakup, saying, “A lot of people can relate to the idea of ‘Twice is too many times'”.

Different from her other tracks, “Twice” has much more production and a darker sound. In her earlier days, she would write music sitting down at the piano or with her guitar, but as she’s worked more with EDM, she feels comfortable writing over a track. Like every writer, her creative process changes depending on the project. She says, “Usually it’s a melody that comes first and then the words but it’s always different – I try to leave as much space for creative freedom and try not to put myself in a box.”

If you’re a fan of “Twice”, be sure to check out the second track on her single, “Stop and Go”. These tracks are the first two tracks on her upcoming EP. Each song represents a different “color” on the EP, but “Stop and Go” is the most similar to “Twice” with a darker sound.

She Is Jules has successfully navigated the social media world, using her platforms to promote her music and grow her network. In fact, everyone she’s been able to collaborate with has been someone she’s found through social media, including Mezz, which she found on Tiktok. Be sure to check out “Twice” on our Mezz Music Mondays Playlist here or submit to our playlist for a chance to be featured here!
